Due to the demand of essential products and services, Ace Hardware announced Friday that it plans on hiring more than 30,000 people across the United States to further support the communities they serve.

Illinois saw its biggest single-day spike since the coronavirus pandemic began Friday, with 1,209 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. That brings the total number of confirmed infections to 8,904 on Friday, health officials announced, with 210 total deaths.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Carle Health has produced a prototype emergency ventilator to help during the surge of respiratory care needed as a result of the coronavirus, the university announced. The emergency ventilator is called the “Illinois RapidVent.” It plugs into the oxygen source available in most hospital rooms or into a tank of oxygen, according to a statement on UIC’s website .
